Get NZ Writing

We have enjoyed learning about what a metaphor is. If you don't know, a metaphor is; it is a phrase that is used to make a comparison between two things, without using the words like or as.

As a class we brainstormed some ideas and came up with:

Room 21 is a lifejacket, keeping each other safe and warm.
Room 21 is a rocket, always trying to reach higher with our learning.
Room 21 is the Adventure Park, finding new tracks leading towards new learning.

Next, we completed an individual metaphor, thinking carefully about how we can represent ourselves.  Take a look at our very creative metaphor I Am poems, which we wrote on postcards for our partner school, Wymondley Road in Auckland.

Take a look at the message it all created once we had our postcards joined together.

We also had to fill out a poster all about Room 21 to share with Wymondley Road School.

Room 21 has Mail!

Room 21 and many other Hoon Hay classes have been participating in the Get NZ Writing initiative which have connected around 96 000 children!  We are one of the 3 000 classes that have exchanged a parcel of student writing. The class we got buddied up with was the wonderful Wymondley Road Primary School in Otara, Auckland.

We have really enjoyed completing our I Am Poems on 32 postcards.  We brainstormed ideas for metaphors and chose one to write on our individual card.  On the back we decorated them and once all put together they displayed the message as you will see in the photo below.

We are looking forward to becoming a buddy class with Wymondley and exchanging letters, emails and the occasional skype chat.
